“A Thunderstorm, Two Dogs, and One Question That Changed My Understanding of Stress”

THE NIGHT THE SKY ROAREDAND THE DOGS DID NOTHING

(A Sriranga Lived-In Story)

The storm didn’t arrive softly..

It rode into Ananda Neelam like something ancient had awakened...

Thunder didn’t just roll… it cracked. Lightning didn’t flash… it split the sky open.

The trees bent over with force. The atmosphere trembled....

The kind of night that reminds you, Nature does not ask for permission...

Inside, Dr. Chari sat at his study table. A research paper lay open...."Meditation and Diabetes Reset."

Irony has a deep sense of humour. Because outside, the sky was anything but meditative..

Another crack of thunder...Closer this time.

Dr Chari paused.

Not out of fear…but something subluminal. A tightening, a restlessness.... A quiet unease that didn’t belong to logic.

Humans don’t fear storms. They fear losing control.

Chari got up and slowly walked toward the living room...And that’s when he saw them..

On the floor...Sita, Arjuna, the dogs.....sprawled, perfectly still, breathing slowly. Not hiding. Not trembling. Just not reacting.

Just… there....Presence.

Another thunderclap tore across the sky. The windows shook and the lights flickered.

Dr. Chari instinctively glanced toward them wanting to protect them..

Nothing...no reaction.

Sita blinked once… and rested her head back down. Arjuna stretched slightly… and settled deeper..

No panic or anxiety. No anticipation of danger....Just presence.

Something struck Dr Chari...

Here was the storm, loud, unpredictable, and deafening...

And here were the dogs, quiet, grounded, untouched.

Dr. Chari sat down beside them. Not to calm them. But to understand.....and learn.

Humans experience any storm in layers....

First the sound...Then we add imagination.

Then the “what if.”

What if something breaks? What if this gets worse? What if something happens?

Finally the storm Outside becomes a storm Inside....

Dogs don’t do that. They hear the thunder.

They feel the vibration.

And then they ask one question “Am I safe right now?”

If the answer is yes…They return to rest, calm, stillness.

No story. No doomsday projection...

Dr. Chari watched Sita. Her breath was steady. He placed his hand lightly on her back. It was warm, grounded and calm.

Not because the storm was small. But because her world was simple “Appa is here.

I am safe.”

Faith, belief and mindfulness.

Arjuna shifted slightly and placed his head against Dr. Chari’s foot...

A silent anchoring. As if to say:

“If you are here… then nothing is wrong.”

And in that moment…The research paper on meditation suddenly felt incomplete.

Because here, on the floor, lay two living beings…living what humans spend years trying to learn.

Mindfulness is not Silence....It is not the absence of Noise. Rather it is the absence of Resistance.

The thunder didn’t stop. The lightning didn’t relent.

But something inside Dr. Chari did...

His breath slowed. The “what if” dissolved.

The storm remained outside...

Dogs don’t fight reality. They don’t negotiate with it.

They accept, and in that acceptance, they remain whole and mindful.

Humans chase calm...Dogs allow it.

The storm passed...Just like all storms do…

eventually....

Today What Storms are you fighting and not letting go??

Sita lifted her head, stretched.

Walked out...As if nothing had happened.

Because for her…Nothing had.

"The Sriranga Insight"

Your dog is not calm because the world is safe. Your dog is calm because they don’t leave the present moment.

Humans suffer storms twice....

Once Outside....Once Inside.

Dogs only experience one.

And maybe…

they’re not just living with us...Maybe they’re showing us how to live...🐾
