Chinnasaami and the Haircut Horror: A Funny, Tender Tale of Childhood and Home

Chinnasaami ...Haircut Horror!

Saami was not happy, not at all. Today appa had caught hold of him, as Saami sauntered among the huge trees. "Chinnasaami", he shouted. Come here, your hair looking like a raven nest. Saami was not impressed. He let his hair grow as it wants like all the plants, he loved. "It is beautiful, not unruly", he said.

"Saami, sit down". Dad put him on the wooden chair in the small gazebo sitting area, and waved a white cloth around him. "Look sharp", Appa said, "I am going to clean up and make your hair decent".

Before, saami could wriggle away, Appa started to snipe at his hair locks, triming, cutting, and knocking off hair.

Saami tried his best to yell and wriggle away to save his precious locks, but dad held him with his firm grasp and warned, "Saami if u wriggle, I will cut your ears off",....

Saami was petrified and visions of his ears gone, blood pouring out floated infront of his eyes ....God, Appa was a heartless man, he realised.

After about 20 min, dad was mightly pleased with his work. Chinna, off u go. You look like a newly minted prince. "Run and show to amma", he said.

Chinnasami was digusted by all this. How could dad knock off his hair? What decent? He was looking great before dad bulldozed it. What a hard life, he sighed, when everybody is out to straighten him up.

Saami slithered away, lest dad again decided he needed shorter cut n swiped away at his hair. He scampered to the clearing in the farm, where the overlay of thick trees allowed the sun light to stream in creating a gosamer- like effect.

Saami plopped on his bench made of tree branches. He gave a kick to the squirrel lazing around, which ran prettily in horror.

Chinnasaami was not impressed. Why should plants be cut? he thought. Same with hair, he remarked in derision.

Saami curled down on the tree bench and watched the clouds hang heavily in the sky. He felt a wet touch on his arms and saw his furry Mylo give a slurp to his hand. Oh! Mylsie, you darling. Mylsie was Saami's dog, a half-breed border-coolie. Saami picked furry Mylo and entwined him completely. Slurp, slurp went Mylsie tongue and Chinnasaami's tears rolled down, as he remembered his hair, all gone. What cruelty! I am sure authorities will do something to stop this horror on hair of small children!

Saami, the voice came wafting. He ignored the voice. He had decided, he was not going back to the house where dad's dont respect kids!

Saami, Saami, Saaammiiiii, the voice hollered. It was his mother. She was getting worried as Saami was not to be seen.

Saaammiiii.....amma was really angry. She would come searching for him. Saami quiet as a mouse, slithered to the house. Saami saamiiii, amma shouted, 'how many times should I tell u, answer, when I call". "I am going to break your hand if you sit like stone, not answering me', she shouted.

Saami now knew, amma was into a tantrum. Dad had called it a panic attack. Saami, knew, amma would go hyper, attacking him verbally, shouting, ranting, without realising what she was talking until she would hyperventilate, sweat and feel sick.

"Amma, amma, calm down, I am here, nothing to worry" he said calmly. Saami tried to calm her down as he had seen Appa do. Amma, plz breathe slowly, deeply and calm down.

Amma gazed at him trying to breathe slowly and deeply. Saami held her hand, as slowly control came back and she came back to normal.

Saami, she kissed him on forehead and smothered him, what will I do if something happens to you, chinna??

Saami cried in his mothers arms, hair and all injustices by dad forgotten. Happy to be alive and to have ma and dad and the lovely place called home.

I forgive dad, saami thought, happy in ammas arms, smelling her jasmine scent.

What a day! life is full and happy.....Saami smiled and let go off his troubles.... happy to be in amma's arms.... wonderful day indeed....
