Yes, chronic inflammation can cause a variety of diseases and kill too.
Inflammation happens acutely when there is a injury or infection. And there is chronic inflammation which is implied in numerous diseases including heart disease, Diabetes, Asthma, Autoimmune diseases, Arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Bowel diseases and Cancers too.
What causes chronic inflammation?
1. Untreated infection/ inflammation.
2. Autoimmune disorders.
3. Long-term exposure to irritants and chemicals.
4. Smoking and alchohol.
5. Obesity
6. Chronic Stress.
How is it caused?
Chronic inflammation causes immune system to go on high alert for longtime releasing chemical messengers and white blood cells which destroy healthy tissue and organs.
For eg, when person is overweight, there is visceral fat, which immune system perceived as threat, attacks and causes chronic inflammation and diseases.
How to prevent?
1. Healthy lifestyle with balanced diet and regular exercise, good sleep.
2. Avoid smoking and alcohol.
3. Avoid refined and processed foods. Keep away from sodas, sugary drinks.
4. Mediterranean diet.
5. Reduce stress by yoga, meditation etc.
6. Use of antioxidant foods like berries, plums, red grapes, onions, turmeric, spinach, green tea etc.
Too much of a good thing applies to much of life. More so with inflammation leading to diseases.
