“Dogs Don’t Love Your Mask. They Respond to Who You Really Are.”

🐾 WHY DO DOGS FOLLOW SOME HUMANS LIKE A SHADOW?

(A Sriranga Lived-Life Story)

There’s something strange about Arjuna, our big dog at our farm.....

I have noticed...he doesn’t follow everyone equally.

People assume Arjuna follows people because he’s friendly...

Actually he isn’t....there is something deeper.

Arjuna observes people....keenly, assesses them...at first meeting itself...

Visitors come to Ananda Neelam often. Some come talking loudly. Some try too hard to be nice.

Some call out sweetly...

“Arjuuuu… come kanna…”

He looks at them politely. Then turns his back and walks away.

But with certain people…something changes. Something is different..

He follows them everywhere...kitchen, garden, cowshed, verandah....like a big shadow ...

Not because they offered treats. Or because they are trying to impress him...something else. Something almost invisible..

The same happens with Sita, our sweetie, another of our dogs...

Most people see Sita as calm and affectionate....

But that’s not entirely true. Sita chooses, carefully....

Some people pet her and she quietly tolerates it.

Others walk into the farm and within minutes she lies beside them as if she has known them forever with no hesitation. ..Just trust.

For a long time, I wondered why this behaviour....?

Was it smell? Tone of voice? Body language?

Yes partly. But that is not the full solution..

Then one evening, while sitting under the mango tree watching Arjuna rest his giant head silently on my lap…the realisation suddenly came...

Dogs don’t respond to the version we show the world.

They respond to the version we are trying to hide.

This is ..the truth.

Humans perform for outside audience...a mask.... of strength, confidence, success, control, even pleasantness..

Humans learn early that vulnerability must be edited before public display.

Dogs don’t read edited versions. They read our nervous systems like open books.

That confident businessman who arrived at the farm?

Arjuna avoided him completely.

Everyone found it strange.

“He loves people! Why is he acting like this?”

Later that evening, the man quietly admitted he had been going through panic attacks for months.

He had hidden it well from humans...

Not from Arjuna.

Then there was the elderly woman who arrived silently, carrying grief that it hung around her...

She barely spoke....mostly she was silent.

Within ten minutes, Sita was sleeping beside her feet....no talk. No coaxing....Just recognition.

Science is slowly beginning to explain this.

Dogs are extraordinarily sensitive to micro facial changes, breathing patterns, cortisol shifts, muscle tension, heart-rate variability and emotional congruence and energy.

In simple words...they sense when the Outer version and Inner Version don’t match.

Humans listen to words. Dogs listen to coherence.

That’s why some people instantly calms the dogs and become friends.

And some people make dogs uneasy despite smiling beautifully outside.

Animals don’t care about social masks....

They care about safety, and emotional honesty. About what your body is saying beneath your personality..

This is why dogs become shadows around certain humans...

Not because those humans are perfect.

Often it is the opposite...Because they are emotionally real. No masks..grounded, safe and real underneath.

Dogs are drawn not to perfection…but to authenticity and the Real version Inside.

Arjuna follows me everywhere on the farm...

Not because I trained him aggressively...

But because dogs trust nervous systems that feel predictable, safe and natural.

Sometimes, late in the evening, Sita simply lies beside me in silence...No touch. No interaction.Just presence.

And honestly that is the purest form of love on earth.

Dogs and Animals seem to be saying...

“I see the version of you the world never sees.

And I’m staying anyway.”

Maybe that’s why dogs heal humans so deeply. Because for a few moments around them…we stop performing.

And that’s also why losing a dog hurts too much. Because they loved us beneath the mask 🐾
