🐾 I Do Nothing. And That Is Everything...
(Sita speaks)
Every morning, the house explodes with buzzing activity..
Humans explode like small nasty crackers..with noise, shoes, misplaced notebooks, and rising voices.
Today was no different.
I was already awake, of course. Dogs don’t sleep the way humans do. We rest, but part of us is always listening to the invisible sounds and energies.
The sun had just kissed the mango leaves outside. The earth was still cool. The air smelled of dew and possibility.
I lay on the verandah...Doing nothing ofcourse...Which, as I had observed, is something humans are not good at.
Inside, Saami had begun his morning ritual.
“I don’t want to go to school!”
This is his favourite opening line. He uses it daily. Sometimes twice.
Radha Amma stood in front of him, holding a uniform in one hand and patience in the other — both very shaky...
“Sami… please. We are getting late.”
Saami ran. Radha followed.
He hid behind the chair. She negotiated.
He dropped his sock. She picked it up.
He sighed like a tired old man who had seen too much of life. He is only eight, lovely youth..ah.
I watched..Not judging...Not helping.
Just watching.
Radha Amma’s face carried many smells today....Worry, hurry, exhaustion and yes love.
Humans leak emotions through their skin. Dogs read it like a book.
Radha was close to tears. Not because of socks. Not because of school. Because humans carry yesterday into today. And tomorrow into today. And ten imaginary tomorrows into today....
Dogs don’t do that. We live only in the smell of now....just today...that's enough...
Sami finally wore one sock. Then removed it again.
Radha Amma sat down heavily...."ayoo saami, plz kanna."
For a moment, neither moved.
I lifted my head and watched them. Not with concern. With presence.
Humans think they need to solve everything.
Dogs know something deeper. Most storms end faster when you don’t run into them.
Dr. Chari walked past me then, holding his tea.
He paused. Looked at me.
“You are doing nothing, Sita?”
Yes...I am doing nothing....yeah...I am practising mindfulness, I wagged my tail vigorously.....
Ahh...And because I am doing nothing, my heart is slow. My breath is deep and nervous system is quiet. The earth held me.
The sun warmed me. This moment required nothing else...
This is what humans now call Mindfulness.
Dogs call it living at peace with presence...
Inside, the storm began to recede....
Sami came out slowly, uniform half-worn.
Radha Amma stood up again, softer now.
They didn’t know why...But I knew. Calm is contagious.
One regulated nervous system in the house slowly invites others to remember theirs and follow...
Dogs are often that nervous system. We don’t teach mindfulness. We embody it.
Sami walked past me toward the gate.
He stopped. Touched my head absentmindedly.....I wagged...
In that moment, his smell changed. Less chaos. More child now...
Saami left smiling...
Radha Amma stood at the door watching him go. Her shoulders dropped slightly as tension dropped away...
Peace doesn’t arrive loudly. It arrives quietly, disguised as ordinary moments...
I lay down again. Doing nothing. Watching the leaves. Listening to the wind.
Feeling my breath move in and out.
Humans believe happiness comes from control...
Dogs know it comes from allowing, by presence...
I do not chase peace...I remain still.
And peace finds me🐾
