🌿 The Love Story Hidden Inside Two Separate Lives...

(A Ponmanipudi Tale)

Nobody in Ponmanipudi understood Ramalakhan.

The man missed his wife, Yashoda, too much.

Every evening at seven o'clock, Ramalakhan ended his day...whether work ended or not.

A phone appeared from his pocket.

Ramalakhan transformed from a 43-year-old worker to a teenager, as a wide smile appeared on his face.

"Yashoda?" He blushed gazing softly into her eyes....

"Hmm?"

"What are you cooking?"

"You called to ask that?"

"No."

"Then?"

"I forgot."

" But I told you in afternoon"

Yashoda laughed a big smile.. her husband of 20 years...still in love....

Her laugh travelled two thousand kilometres from Uttarakhand to Ponmanipudi.

And somehow landed exactly where it belonged....right inside Ramalakhan.

"Rains" he asked feeling a glow inside.

"Yes" "I had less bleeding" Yashoda shyly said, covering her face...

"Ramalakhana," Yashoda muttered under her breath, feeling the soft trickling tears on her face...

The workers teased Ramalakhan mercilessly.

"Twenty years married."

"Yes."

"Still calling three times a day? Are you a man?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Ramalakhan looked genuinely confused.

"Because Yashoda is there. "My heart is there""

Nobody knew how to argue with that.

Meanwhile, fifty kilometres away in Brindlemalai, another marriage existed....officially.....

Anu and Jeevan.....

Nobody remembered when they had stopped being husband and wife....physically, emotionally, spiritually.....

Nothing really had happened... Yes, something more quieter had happened.

Anu and Jeevan had become witnesses to each other's lives.....nothing more.

Years ago, they had been the love couple everybody envied....Long calls....Long walks...Long dreams....a future which had seemed so rosy....Anu ....Jeeva...

Now even short conversations felt exhausting and most times irritating......now different worlds.

One evening Appuswamy asked Jeevan casually..

"How is Anu?"

Jeevan shrugged.

"Fine. I think..."

"How do you know?"

A pause.

"I assume."

The tea stall became strangely quiet.

Even Appuswamy regretted asking.

Because that answer sounded less like marriage. And more like weather.....

Months passed.....Life continued.

Then one afternoon sudden news arrived from Uttarakhand....

Yashoda had slipped and fallen down in the mountains...hospital...observation....nothing life-threatening......Just a small injury to leg.

"Small injury and sprain. Nothing to worry" "Should be ok in three weeks" The doctor who spoke on phone reassured.

Yet when Ramalakhan heard...the colour disappeared from his face. He turned ashen.

Within hours he had borrowed money...booked tickets...packed bags.

Half forgot his clothes and packed them again.

The entire village watched him run around like a man escaping a burning building, tear-eyed and restless.

At the bus stand, next morning Ramalakhan found himself sitting beside Jeevan.

Neither spoke initially.

"Going home?"

"Yes, yes...yes..."

Then Ramalakhan asked..

"When did you last see your wife, Anu?"

Jeevan thought.

Actually thought.

"Maybe..."

"Three months."

Ramalakhan blinked.

"Three months?"

"Yes."

The silence that followed felt deep, enormous.

Finally Ramalakhan asked softly..

"How?"

Jeevan laughed.

A tired laugh.

"I don't know."

For a moment the bus stand disappeared.

No buses. No noise. No tea sellers....

Just two married men sitting side by side...

One unable to bear fourteen months away from his wife and pining for her.

The other somehow surviving three months without even noticing.

Then Ramalakhan asked something nobody had ever asked Jeevan.

"Do you miss her?"

The question arrived like a stone thrown directly at him.

Jeevan opened his mouth. And then closed it.

Because he didn't know. ....

And not knowing frightened him.

Far more than the answer would have.

The bus arrived....

Ramalakhan stood.

Then hesitated.

"My friend..."

"Hmm?"

"Distance is very painful."

Jeevan nodded.

Ramalakhan smiled sadly.

"No."

"What?"

"The wrong distance."

Then he climbed aboard, waved and left..

That last sentence stayed behind in Jeevan's mind for weeks....months.

One evening Jeevan drove past Brindlemalai.

Anu lived there....Only fifty kilometres away.

A road sign appeared....BRINDLEMALAI - 7 KM.

Jeevan's foot eased off the accelerator of his car. For one second...he almost turned towards Brindlemalai.....

Almost...then didn't.

Not because he was angry. Not because he hated her. Not because she hated him....

Those things would have been easier.

The truth was worse....Habit build over long years forced by life's circumstances....

The road continued. So did Jeevan.

And somewhere in that ordinary decision...

an entire marriage revealed itself.

Months later Ramalakhan returned from Uttarakhand.

The first thing he did was show everybody photographs.....Ah! the happiness on his face!

Yashoda smiling.

Yashoda cooking.

Yashoda drinking tea.

Yashoda living normal life....

The photos were passed on to everybody. .... even to the dogs...

At Appuswamy's tea stall, the photographs became the talk of the day....

Appuswamy, pouring his special elachi-moringa tea, looked a bit puzzled...

"Doctor..."

Chari looked up.

"Which marriage is stronger?"

Across the road Ramalakhan sat smiling at his phone, the tea cup in his hand.....

Two thousand kilometres away, Yashoda smiled back, happy, glowing beautifully at Ramalakhana.....amor.

A thousand conversations still waiting to happen. A world of dreams unfolding...

Far away, in misty hills of Brindlemalai, Anu was finishing dinner alone, the single lamp flickering in the dark night.

And somewhere on another road, Jeevan drove home...

Neither angry. Neither happy....Neither waiting....Just continuing life's long journey.

Chari watched both worlds quietly.....

Then stirred his tea.

"One marriage survives because both continue to travel.....to each other."

Appuswamy nodded.

"And the other?"

For a long time Chari said nothing, looking deeply into the dark night.

Then very softly...he said...

"The other stopped travelling long ago."

"Travelling where?"

Chari looked toward the fading highway in dark..

"Toward each other."

Nobody spoke after that.

Even Appuswamy....or Selvam.

Because suddenly everyone understood something uncomfortable and unsettling....

The longest distance in the world is not between Ponmanipudi and Uttarakhand.

It is between two people...who once knew the way home 🌿

Welcome to Ponmanipudi... where nothing is as it seems.

PS: Some couples are separated by mountains.

Some are separated by silence.

And silence is usually harder to cross 🌿
