The Boy Who Wanted to Join the Circus

For weeks, people had been talking about the famous Gemini Circus that was touring towns across South India.

One hot afternoon...it finally arrived in Ponmanipudi...

A drummer came first. Behind him came the horse cart with bright red posters hung all around..

By sunset...every wall in Ponmanipudi had the same words of the posters hugging it...

"GEMINI CIRCUS"

Only Three Nights!

Ponmanipudi forgot itself. A new energy perked the village up....

At Appuswamy's tea stall...old men argued whether elephants could really stand on stools.

Children insisted they had heard there were four lions.

Someone claimed a man swallowed swords.

Someone else whispered there was a beautiful woman who flew.

A magician, whom Murugan had seen, sent people to heavens....cut into pieces and joined together...

Even Mylo barked whenever people said the word...

"Circus."

Chami stood staring at the bright posters. There were elephants, camels, white horses, seals, dogs jumping through rings....clowns with impossible smiles....

A magician pulling birds from empty hats....ayoo and snakes too....kadavule..!

And high above them all...a beautiful young woman in shiny dress flying through the air.

Chami looked at Mylo.

"We're going." Mylo wagged his crooked tail vigorously in assent.

The next afternoon...they disappeared after school...

Following dusty bullock-cart tracks beyond the village...they finally saw them....huge canvas tents, red, blue, gold with flags fluttering.

Chami saw smoke rising from cook fires.

Elephants swaying gently as if to some music. Horses being brushed. Parrots chattering...

The whole place smelled of hay, sawdust and jaggery tea.....and something akin to sweat...

Chami patted Mylo, whispered "stay" and slipped in....

Nobody noticed one little boy...slithering beneath the canvas.....

Inside...it was another world.....a dream...

An elephant carefully lifted a little girl onto its back. Two dogs practised leaping through hoops.

A clown stood before a cracked mirror...trying different smiles.

A magician dropped his cards....picked them up....dropped them again....and again...

Above everyone...the trapeze artist flew across the tent....she missed, climbed back....tried again...missed again.....

Then laughed a beautiful laugh and climbed back once more...

Chami blinked......as he watched this magical world unfold...

A circus worker carrying coils of rope noticed him.

"Lost?"

Chami shook his head.

"I've come home."

The man laughed.

"So have all of us."

"Can I join the circus?"

The old man smiled.

"What can you do?"

Chami thought.

"I can climb trees."

"I can whistle."

"My dog can catch mangoes."

The man burst into laughter.

"You'll fit in....si"

That evening...Chami couldn't eat or sleep....

He lay staring at the ceiling seeing the Great Chami making a ferocious tiger, bow to his command. And yes, that beautiful girl looking at him adoringly..."Chami"

Tomorrow...he would see the real show...

Chami had decided finally. One day he too would travel the world. People would clap. Children would cheer.

Beautiful girls would smile at him..

He would never leave the circus....never.

The next evening...Ponmanipudi gathered beneath the great tent.

Trumpets, drums, bright lights....mesmerized the crowds...

The ringmaster's booming voice, the elephants marched proudly, the horses dancing, the dogs raced through tunnels made people forget their worlds...

The magician pulled impossible miracles from empty air..... threatening to make his assistant disappear into thin air...

The clown made even Narayana Shastrigal laugh.

Then...the lights dimmed..

A spotlight found the trapeze.....Chami heart skipped a beat....

She flew, floated....danced....

For a moment...it seemed gravity had won...

The entire tent rose in applause. She bowed ....

Chami clapped until his palms hurt.

"This is it, Appa."

Dr. Chari smiled.

"What is?"

"My life....this is my life..."

When the final bow ended...families began walking home.

But Chami refused...

"Just five more minutes."

Dr. Chari nodded.

"I'll wait."

The lights went out, one by one. Music faded away. All the children and crowds disappeared.

Dust began to settle down slowly...

The enormous tent became strangely silent.

Then...something started happening...

The circus began to disappear...men untied ropes. canvas folded....wooden benches were stacked. The trapeze came down in pieces...

The painted horses were loaded into wagons.

The clown quietly wiped away his painted smile...and without the red nose...he looked like somebody's father.

Chami watched in silence...

Then he saw her...the flying girl, the one who had looked like a bird only minutes ago...

She emerged carrying one end of a long wooden pole....an old worker carried the other.

Both were sweating profusely....

Neither looked glamorous like in the show tent....

Halfway across the tent...they stopped.

She laughed at something the old man whispered. Not the laugh she had given the audience....a smaller one, quiet one...a real one.

She noticed Chami watching....smiled just once and disappeared behind the canvas.

On the way home...Dr. Chari didn't ask a single question.

Neither did Chami speak.

Even Mylo who had come searching for Chami, walked quietly...as if a profound truth had revealed itself...

Before sunrise...Chami woke.

"Mylo!"

He grabbed yesterday's circus ticket.

"We're late!"

They ran across the fields. ..past the temple...beyond the banyan tree....until they reached the circus grounds.

But ...nothing....the tents were gone...The elephants were gone...

The music was gone...

The laughter was gone...all vanished into thin air.

Only deep wheel tracks curved across the earth were seen...

A forgotten red ribbon fluttered gently from a thorn bush.

Near it...an elephant's footprint still held last night's rainwater.

The morning breeze ruffled through the empty field...as though nothing extraordinary had ever happened there. No magic ....or maybe magic did happen..

Chami walked slowly to the ribbon...picked it up, folded it carefully and placed it inside his shirt pocket.

He looked once more at the empty horizon.

Then quietly turned home...

He didn't cry or speak...just deep silence...

Years later...while searching for an old notebook...I found that faded red ribbon pressed between two pages....

I smiled...

Some dreams are never meant to stay....

They arrive like a travelling circus...fill a child's heart with impossible wonder...and leave behind just enough colour...

to help him dream for the rest of his life..
