The Man Who Made Things Grow | A Ponmanipudi Story
The Man Who Made Things Grow
"If you asked ten people in Ponmanipudi who Gyanasekaran really was, you would receive eleven different answers."
Nobody in Ponmanipudi could explain Gyanasekaran.
This was very strange...because everybody had an explanation or tried to have one...
"If he touches a mango sapling..."
said Appuswamy,
"...it grows."
"If my cows stop eating..."
claimed old Ranga,
"...I send them to Gyana..."
"My grandson wouldn't speak to anyone."
said Kamalamma.
"Gyana sat with him for twenty minutes."
"What happened?"
"They spoke about dragonflies and wizards..."
Nobody agreed on the miracle. Everybody agreed on the man...
Every morning...before the sun climbed over Brindlemalai,.....
Gyanasekaran wheeled his strange four-wheeled American vehicle out of the shed. He called it the "atma" jokingly.
Nobody knew actually what it was called or what it was...
Children called it...
"The Animal Bike."
Because it went anywhere, across rocks, fields, streams..... effortlessly....even places where bullock carts refused to go....
The first passengers...were never people.
Three village dogs waited every morning outside his gate....Karuppan, Malli and one-eyed Podi.
As soon as they heard the engine...tails began wagging and Podi vocalised a low "ooooO..."
"You're all jobless."
Gyana laughed.
"So am I."
The dogs followed him anyway happily....
His house had no office. At least...not officially. His courtyard served as his "office"..
One wooden table, one old chair, a few welcoming benches....books piled everywhere....a brass lamp, wind chimes, an old globe....a telescope all hanging around in the courtyard....
Bundles of herbs hanging upside down....
One broken clock...that had refused to move for twelve years....all present...watching...being....
Nobody had repaired the clock.
Gyana said...
"It has found peace."
By nine o'clock...people had already begun arriving.
"Anna..."
"Gyana..."
"My daughter won't study."
"My husband doesn't speak."
"My son wants to quit farming."
"My buffalo has stopped giving milk."
"My neighbour won't return my ladder."
"My wife is missing..."
"My son refuses to come from chicago...."
Gyana listened calmly always...never once interrupted or hurried.....nodding his head..eyes closed....
Sometimes...he answered..
Sometimes...he only smiled....
One afternoon...Dr. Chari found him reading beneath the neem tree.
Four dogs slept nearby in peace....
Two calves stood chewing lazily beside him.
Sparrows hopped fearlessly around his feet.
"You've cast another spell?"
Dr. Chari laughed.
Gyana looked up.
"I tried yesterday."
"On whom?"
"My brinjal plants."
"Did it work?"
"No."
"They're still stubborn."
They laughed.
Dr. Chari became serious.
"I've always wanted to ask."
"Hmm?"
"Why do people leave happier than they arrive?"
Gyana scratched Karuppan behind the ears.
"I don't know."
"You must."
"I honestly don't."
"You've studied astrology."
"A little."
"Psychology?"
"A little."
"Meditation?"
"A little."
"Occult books?"
"A few."
"So what is it?"
Gyana was quiet, very quiet...as if he was far away...
Finally...he asked,
"Doctor..."
"When was the last time somebody listened to you..."
"...without trying to win?"
Silence.....
"When was the last time somebody looked at you..."
"...without judging?"
Silence again.....ah!
"When was the last time somebody sat with you..."
"...without looking at the clock?"
Dr. Chari had no answer.....a glimmer of spark rising....
Just then...a little girl came running.
She held a clay pot.
"It's broken."
Gyana took it gently...
One side had cracked clean through.
He smiled.
"We'll grow flowers in it."
"But it's broken."
"So?"
"It won't hold water."
"It doesn't have to."
The little girl frowned....
He filled the crack with soil, planted a tiny flowering creeper...
And handed it back.
"There."
She stared.....then smiled and ran home, holding the broken pot as though it had become treasure.
That evening...while returning from the fields...Dr. Chari saw something....
Outside Gyanasekaran's gate...there was no board, no sign, no advertisement, no certificates.....only people.....waiting....talking softly, laughing.....at peace...
Dogs sleeping. Children playing...
Somebody reading a book.
Somebody watering a plant.
Nobody seemed impatient. Nobody wanted to leave...
Appuswamy walked past.
"Busy day?"
Dr. Chari asked.
Appuswamy smiled.
"Always."
"What's the secret?"
Appuswamy shrugged.
"I don't know."
He looked towards Gyanasekaran.
Then added quietly...
"But have you noticed something?"
"What?"
"Nobody goes there..."
"...because he has all the answers."
"They go..."
"...because when they leave..."
"...they somehow feel..."
"...they already had them."
Much later...as darkness settled over Ponmanipudi...Gyanasekaran switched off the courtyard lamp.
The dogs stretched. The wind chimes whispered.
He picked up the broken clay pot he had kept aside, touched the tiny green shoot emerging from the soil.... Smiled to himself.
Then gently said...
"Grow well, kanda..."
Whether he was speaking to the plant... or to himself...or to everyone who had visited that day...
no one could ever tell.🌿
