🌿 The Debt Manohar Could Never Repay

Nobody in Ponmanipudi School understood why students loved Ramappa so much.

The staff didn't....they hated him.

"He's impossible."

"Never follows syllabus."

"Always telling... ah stupid stories."

"Children laugh too much in his class."

The complaints arrived every year, novel complaints.

Ramappa listened politely. Then ignored every single one.

Ramappa was thin as a reed, bald, perpetually dusty. He had a "shaliya" wrapped around his neck backwards like a snake, immaterial of whatever shirt he wore. The dark black hair on the backside of his head shone.....but the front, bald pate looked dull.....

He permanently carried three things...a cloth bag slung on his shoulder, a steel water bottle, and an uncountable number of stories.

According to Ramappa, everything could be taught through a story..

Photosynthesis?

Story.

Algebra?

Story.

Gravity?

Three stories.

Discipline?

Definitely not a lecture.

A story.

One day he entered class carrying a coconut...

The students cheered.

"Sir, science?"

"No."

"Maths?"

"No."

"Then?"

Ramappa held up the coconut.

"Today this fellow teaches philosophy."

The entire class erupted in delight.

The Headmaster did not appreciate these methods.

"Children need marks."

Ramappa nodded....

"Yes, they also need memories."

The Headmaster disliked him more after that.

Years passed....then decades.

Students came and went....doctors, farmers,

teachers, engineers, shopkeepers, Government officers....

The stories travelled further than Ramappa ever did.

Ramappa never really left Ponmanipudi....ah, yes, once he was posted to Brindlemalai, Rajathooram and Kalaicherulu..

But mostly, Ramappa remained exactly where he had always been...classroom, blackboard,

dust, and stories....lots of them.

Thirty years passed.....of stories and teaching Life.

One Monday morning, a black luxury SUV appeared outside the school.

The entire village became suspicious immediately.....a Mercedes .....

Ponmanipudi trusted bicycles, yes. Not luxury vehicles.

A well-dressed smart looking man stepped out.

The teachers gathered instantly....

The Headmaster adjusted his shirt and his hair.

Visitors like this usually meant donations...

The man smiled politely.

"I am looking for Ramappa, "Rama" sir."

The Headmaster looked surprised.

"Why?"

The visitor smiled.

"He owes me something."

That spread through the school faster than electricity.

Ramappa owes money....

Nobody was shocked. Teachers are experts at owing money to others.

Rumour spread immediately......Ramappa....ayoo....

Some said lakhs. Some said crores.

Appuswamy even claimed international debt...."inside information" he laughed.

Reality was much simpler.....

The visitor was Manohar, former student. Now, Vice President of one of the world's largest internet companies....

Silicon Valley, millions of users....huge teams and huge responsibilities.

Yet he had travelled thousands of kilometres to find a bald teacher in Ponmanipudi.

When Ramappa finally appeared, he stared blankly.

"Who are you?"

The visitor laughed.

"Exactly."

The teachers laughed too.

"I am Manohar."

Ramappa squinted.....trying to recollect his memory..

Silence.

Then suddenly..

"The boy who failed mathematics twice?"

The entire staff burst into laughter.

Even Manohar.

"Three times, sir."

"Ah yes."

"Consistency, have to maintain consistency, aalva....."

"Yes, sir..." Manohar agreed humbly.

Now everybody laughed.

The two men sat beneath the giant rain tree near the playground.

For hours they spoke...

Old stories, old classmates, old mistakes....

Finally the Headmaster approached them...he was curious to know.....

"So..."

He smiled diplomatically.

"What brings someone like you all the way here from US of A?"

Manohar looked toward Ramappa.

Then smiled.

"A debt."

The Headmaster nodded knowingly....

Ah....money....finally....now the reality, he smiled within himself.

But Manohar shook his head.

"Not that kind." he said simply.

"When I was fourteen..."

"I wanted to leave school."

Nobody moved....

Even Ramappa looked surprised.

Manohar continued..."My father had died."

"My mother was struggling."

"I thought my education was over."

The playground became very quiet now. Even the birds stopped chattering....

Manohar continued softly.

"One evening I told Ramappa sir."

The old teacher frowned. Apparently he had forgotten this too.

Manohar smiled.

"You know what he said?"

Nobody answered.

"'Good.'" "Rama sir, had said.."

The staff looked confused.

"'Good?'"

Manohar nodded...

"Yes" "I was furious."

Everyone laughed.

"What kind of teacher says good?"

Ramappa scratched his head.

"I still don't know."

More laughter.

Then Manohar's voice softened.

"Rama sir told me..."

"'If you leave school, leave properly in dignity.'"

"'Don't disappear quietly.'"

"'Stand in front of the class tomorrow.'"

"'Tell everybody your dream died.'"

The laughter vanished now.

"'Tell them life defeated you.'"

The playground became still.

Manohar swallowed.

"I couldn't do it. No, I could not..."

A pause..

"I came back the next day."

Another pause.

"And the next."

"And the next."

Manohar's eyes glistened now.

"Thirty years later..."

He looked around the school.

"...I am here because one teacher refused to comfort me." he thundered loudly now.

Nobody spoke.

The wind moved gently through the trees.

Children played somewhere in the distance.

Then Manohar reached into his bag.

The teachers sat forward....

donation cheque....surely.

Instead he removed something unexpected...

An old notebook....The cover was falling apart, pages yellow, corners damaged....

Ramappa stared.

Then laughed.

"My stories."

Manohar nodded.

"I still have it."

The old teacher touched the notebook gently, tears in his eyes.....

Inside were hundreds of handwritten stories...

science, maths, life, questions, ideas....

Thirty years old. Saved all these years.

The old man's hands trembled slightly.

For the first time...Ramappa stopped joking.

Then very quietly he asked...

"You kept this?"

Manohar nodded.

"Of course."

A pause.

"You told us marks disappear."

Another pause.

"But stories stay."

Nobody noticed when the Headmaster removed his glasses....and wiped his eyes.

Or when two teachers suddenly became interested in the ground.

Or when Ramappa looked away.

Because sometimes...a person discovers they mattered.

And sometimes...that discovery arrives thirty years late.

The next morning the luxury SUV was gone...

The school looked exactly the same.

Children shouted. Teachers complained.

Fans squeaked.....Life continued.

Only one thing had changed....

When Ramappa entered class carrying a coconut...the Headmaster did not stop him.

"Science today?" a student asked.

Ramappa smiled.

"No."

"Maths?"

"No."

"Then what?"

He held up the coconut.

And somewhere deep inside...

a forgotten fourteen-year-old boy smiled too..🌿

Welcome to Ponmanipudi... where nothing is as it seems.

Some teachers finish lessons.

Some teachers continue teaching long after the bell rings. ...🌿
