What If You Keep Quitting Because You Are Looking in the Wrong Direction?

Rahul had changed his life almost twenty times. Unfortunately...none of the changes lasted.

Rahul started a business....for fifteen days. He was unstoppable...new ideas, new plans, new notebooks...etc.

Then he discovered something interesting very online...A new opportunity....a better business model...a more exciting direction...And the first business slowly died.

Then came weight loss...gym membership, diet chart, protein supplements, morning walks..

For nearly two weeks, Rahul became a different man. Then the enthusiasm faded.

Ah! he then tried yoga..then Zumba...then another diet...

Then nothing...back to orginal state.

Money? Same story...

For two or three months, Rahul saved carefully...tracked expenses feeling very proud...

Then one bad month arrived. The saving stopped...Soon the old habits returned.

Rahul looked at me and said:

“Doctor, I can start anything.”

He paused...

“I just can't seem to continue.”

I asked him a simple question.

“When you begin something, how do you decide whether you are succeeding?”

He looked puzzled....

So we started with weight loss.

Rahul wanted to lose twenty kilograms. After two weeks, he had lost one...

What did he see? Not the one kilogram lost. But the nineteen which was not done.

Rahul looked forward. And saw failure.

We then decoded his business....

He had acquired his first few customers.

What did he see? Not the customers he had won.

But he saw the company he had not yet built.

Again he looked forward...and saw failure.

We came to wealth and saving....

He had saved for three months.

What did he see? Not the money he had accumulated....

He saw how far he still was from financial freedom.

Again...he looked forward. And saw failure.

Rahul did not have a starting problem. He had a measuring problem.

I explained an idea associated with entrepreneur and coach Dan Sullivan....

We often measure our lives in one of two directions....

We look forward...toward the ideal.

Or we look backward...toward where we began.

The future is seductive....twenty kilos lighter, a successful company, financial freedom, perfect health and transformed life.

But there is a problem.

The closer we move toward the future...the further the ideal often moves.

Lose five kilograms? Now you want ten.

Earn your first lakh? Now you look at the crore.

Walk three kilometres? Now you compare yourself with someone running a marathon.

The horizon keeps moving. And if the horizon is the only place you measure from...you can make enormous progress and still feel like a failure.

That was Rahul's trap...

Every ten days, he looked at how far he still had to go....

He never looked at how far he had already come.

So we tried something different...

The goal remained. But the measurement changed.

Instead of asking..

“How far am I from twenty kilos?”

He asked...

“What can I do today that I couldn't do three months ago?”

Instead of...“Why isn't my business successful yet?”

He asked..."What have I learned, built or improved since I began?”

Instead of.."Why am I not financially free?”

He asked.."What do I understand about money today that I didn't understand last year?”

Something changed. Not his goal, but his relationship with progress.

This is where many Wellness journeys quietly die....

A person walks for ten days. Eats better for two weeks, sleeps better for a few nights, loses one kilogram....

Then looks at the ideal body still far away and says...

“This isn't working.”

But what if it is working?

What if you simply measured from the wrong end?

The future has one job....to give you direction.

The past has another...to give you evidence.

You need both.

Look forward to know where you are going.

Look backward to remember how much you have progressed.

Rahul had spent years using the future as a judge...

We began using the past as evidence.

And slowly, Rahul stopped restarting his life again and again.

He stayed with one form of exercise long enough to improve. He stopped abandoning every business idea when a shinier one appeared. He began noticing small financial gains instead of dismissing them. He stopped demanding that every week prove the entire future.

For the first time...progress became very visible.

This matters far beyond weight loss.

A person learning a language says..

“I still can't speak fluently.”

But forgets that six months ago, he knew almost nothing.

A writer says..

“My audience is still small.”

But forgets that a year ago, he had no body of work.

An entrepreneur says..

“My business is nowhere near my dream.”

But forgets that once there was only a notebook and an idea.

A patient says..

“I still have so far to go.”

And forgets that six months ago, he had not even begun.

Perhaps this is why so many people quit.

Not because they are weak. Not because the goal is impossible. But because they repeatedly stare at the distance remaining...

and become blind to the distance travelled.

Your future matters. Your goals matter.

Your dreams matter.....

But if you use your dream only to prove how inadequate today is...the dream that was meant to pull you forward may eventually make you stop.

So keep the horizon. But don't measure your worth from it.

Once in a while...turn around....and look at the road behind you....

Look at the person who began.

Look at what you know now.

Look at what your body can do now.

Look at what you survived.

Look at what you built.

Then turn forward again. Not afraid of how far you still have to go.

🌿 Freedom is not only about seeing a bigger future.

It is also about recognizing the person who has already travelled this far.

So tonight, don't ask only..

“How far am I from my goal?”

Ask another question...

“How far am I from the person who first began?”

The answer may be the fuel you were looking for.

Because sometimes...you don't need another new goal.

You need to see your own progress in true perspective.....
