Your Legs Have a Second Heart. Are You Letting It Beat?

The healthiest person in the office wasn't working harder. He was moving smarter.

Last week,  I visited a large tech company to meet a dear friend, Krishna.

In the middle of a busy afternoon, I couldn't find him.

Someone smiled and said,

"Sir... Krishna has gone for his hourly walk."

His hourly walk? I was curious.

A few minutes later, Krishna returned, calm, composed, un-ruffled.

He looked... refreshed, focused, ready for the next meeting....And this was the man leading complex international tech projects.

Yet he carried himself with an ease, I rarely see in people working under constant deadlines and pressures.

I asked him,

"Krishna, what's your secret, man?"

He smiled.

"Doc, every hour I walk for five minutes."

"I rise onto my toes five times."

"I gently tighten my abdominal muscles a few times."

"I take a few deep breaths."

"And every two hours, I drink at least two glasses of water."

Then he laughed....

"I've made my body, part of my work schedule."

That sentence stayed with me.

The puzzle wasn't his veins. It was his lifestyle.

Many people think varicose veins are simply inherited. Genetics certainly play a role.

But there's another part of the story...

Our bodies were designed to move all day around..

When we sit for hours, blood has to work against gravity to return from the legs to the heart.

Thankfully, nature gave us an elegant solution...Your second heart.

Most people know only one heart. But your calf muscles are often called your "second heart."

Every time you walk...

Every time you rise onto your toes...

Every time your calf muscles contract...They gently squeeze the veins and help push blood back toward the heart.

Movement becomes a pump. Constant sitting switches that pump off....

Years later, swollen legs, aching veins and fatigue may be the body's way of asking for movement again.

"Krishna's 1% prescription..."

What impressed me wasn't that Krishna exercised for two hours every day. He didn't.

He simply refused to sit still for eight hours.

His routine was beautifully simple....

-Walk for five minutes every hour.

- Rise onto your toes a few times.

-Stretch gently.

- Take a few deep breaths.

- Stay hydrated.

Tiny actions, repeated consistently.

That's how health compounds. Not through perfection. But through rhythm.

More than healthy veins. Here's what fascinated me most...

Krishna wasn't just protecting his veins...

He was protecting his entire life.

Those five minutes improved circulation of course.

But they also broke long periods of sitting, refreshed his mind, reduced stiffness, encouraged hydration, created moments to breathe, reduced stress...

One small habit. Many quiet benefits.

That's the beauty of small stacked habits.

As I watched Krishna return to his desk, I realised something...

He wasn't interrupting his work. He was protecting his ability to do it well.

Sometimes we think productivity means staying in the chair longer...

Our bodies quietly disagree.

Health isn't built only in gyms. Sometimes it's built in five-minute walks between meetings.

Sometimes it's built by listening when your legs ask you to move.

Because freedom isn't just financial....

It's being able to stand, to walk, to travel, to work, to play with your children, to grow older without feeling trapped inside your own body.

Perhaps that's why I no longer see movement as exercise.I see it as a daily conversation with the body....

A reminder that we were designed to move, not merely to sit.

And the greatest wellness habit isn't finding another free hour.

It's giving your body five minutes before it has to ask for something much bigger.

That is how health and wellness grows.

So when was the last time you stood up—not because your meeting ended, but because your body quietly asked you to?
