Ekadashi, Fasting, and the Science We Are Only Now Rediscovering


When I was young, a common ritual happened in our house every fifteen days.

On Ekadashi, most of members would fast in the house, my grandmother, my mother and my grandfather too.


But each one had a different approach...

My grandmother would do a complete water fast.

My mother used to eat only fruits.

My grandfather keet it simple with light tiffin food...


As a child, it thought it was just tradition...But as a doctor today, I see something far deeper....


"The Intention"


The elders always explained fasting in very simple terms.

“Give the body rest.”

“Let the stomach relax.”

“Let the system cleanse.”

They believed fasting clarified the body and mind.


There was no modern terminology. No metabolic charts. Just quiet wisdom passed through generations...


Modern Science Version Now..


Today the world calls it Intermittent Fasting.

It has become a Wellness trend...


But what fascinates me is how closely modern Metabolic Science mirrors what those traditions were already practicing.


When the body fasts, something remarkable happens.

First, the body burns available glucose. Then it begins using stored glycogen.

After that, metabolism shifts and goes into Repair mode.

The body begins activating deeper repair processes...


The Cellular Reset


During fasting, several biological mechanisms begin to activate.

-Autophagy – cells begin cleaning damaged components

-Mitochondrial repair – the energy factories of the cell improve efficiency

-Insulin sensitivity improves

- Inflammation markers often reduce.


The body gets a chance to reset its internal machinery which is very difficult to achieve when the digestive system is constantly active.


The Hidden Wisdom of Periodic Rest


Our ancestors may not have known the molecular language of metabolism. But they understood something fundamental...


The body is not designed for continuous consumption and usage..

Just as muscles need recovery after exercise, the digestive system also benefits from periodic rest.


Ekadashi fasting is that pause for recovery, once every fifteen days...A biological reset button.


Interestingly, fasting in many traditions was never just physical. It was also mental.

Food reduction was accompanied by:

-quieter routines

-prayer or reflection

- reduced sensory input.


Our Ancient systems has long suggested that what we consume influences both body and mind.

So fasting was not only metabolic. It was also about clarity.


Where Science and Tradition Meet


Quantum physics teaches us that energy systems constantly fluctuate and reorganise..


The body is also an Energy system. Metabolism is essentially energy management at the cellular level.


Fasting changes how that energy flows, shifting the body from constant intake to internal repair.


Modern science describes it with terms like Metabolic Switching.

Traditional cultures simply called it fasting and purification.


The Realisation


What many of us dismissed as tradition may actually have been intuitive biological wisdom.

The elders did not call it intermittent fasting.

But their practice aligned remarkably with what modern science now celebrates as Intermittent Fasting.


Final Reflection


Sometimes progress is not discovering something entirely new. It is rediscovering what wisdom quietly knew long ago...


Ekadashi fasting is more than a religious ritual.

It is a rhythm designed to give the body a chance to repair, reset, and rebalance.


Perhaps the real question is not whether fasting works.

But whether we have forgotten the biological rhythms our ancestors once respected 🌿
